Part I – Analysis

The Slavic burial ground in Dolní Věstonice – Na pískách was used for burials from approximately the turn of the 9^th century until the middle of the 11th century. Archaeological research in 1946–1959 uncovered almost 1,300 skeletal graves, making the site one of the largest early medieval burial grounds in Moravia. The publication contains an evaluation of the current state of research on early medieval chronology in Moravia and an analysis of the methods used to create a chronology based on grave finds. The heart of the work is a detailed analysis of the burial rite and material culture of the burial ground in Dolní Věstonice, set in the context of Central European research. In the conclusion, the development of burials at the site and the chronology of its material culture are presented, developed using, among other things, the method of horizontal stratigraphy.

 

Part II – Catalogue

The catalogue part of the publication of the cemetery in Dolní Věstonice – Na pískách contains detailed descriptions of the graves and the items of grave goods found, as well as extensive pictorial material – photographs of selected graves and drawings of the objects existing today.
